GSQ TECHNICAL NOTES - TN2022/03, GALLIUM IN QUEENSLAND BAUXITE DEPOSITS

This data package contains multi-element geochemistry of bauxitic laterite deposits in Queensland, Australia. The focus of this package was on bauxites of Cape York, but samples were also analysed from Eastern Australian bauxites within Queensland. The results presented were obtained from samples supplied by the following companies: ABx Group Ltd, Cann Global Ltd (was Queensland Bauxite Ltd), Glencore Bauxite Resources Pty Ltd, Metro Mining Ltd and Rio Tinto Ltd.

Gallium is concentrated in bauxite, however, little is known about the gallium levels in Queensland bauxites. The USGS produced an overview of gallium in bauxite (Schulte & Foley, 2014) and reported that 21 samples of bauxite from Cape York produced an average value of 67ppm gallium. They also reported an average gallium value of 52ppm from the Eastern Australian bauxites, but this number would include bauxites outside of Queensland. Other than these two values, no other publicly available data could be found on gallium in Queensland bauxites.
